Amazing Adventures

Holidays are a special time to escape from the routine and pressures of daily life and to live new experiences. A stay at Once upon a Trail will allow you to get back to nature and to make memories to last a lifetime.

Outdoor Activities

There are walks to suit all abilities. Go hunting for dinosaur footprints and lizards, cool off in mountain streams. Enjoy bigger days out hiking in the Aigüestortes National Park or the dizzying Mont Rebei gorge. The peaks that encircle us have steep-sided gorges, with spectacular waterfalls and blue-green rockpools perfect for splashing around and jumping in. Beautiful, crystal-clear mountain lakes are ideal for wild swimming and other watersports, or get in touch with your inner cowboy and trek through hidden valleys on horseback.

Reconnect with nature

This area has a wealth of natural resources which are only just starting to be recognised with the award of ‘Dark Sky’ status and the opening of the Orígens Geopark. It brings together attractions as diverse as the medieval castles that once protected Catalunya against Moorish invaders to ‘Valley of the Vultures’ where you can watch Griffon, Black and Egyptian vultures circling on rising thermals. Autumn is the red deer rutting season, try to spot these magnificent creatures at dusk at our local Nature Reserve before cooking marshmallows over an open fire in the refuge as night falls.

High-octane adventures

The terrain and weather that make this area a great place for cycling also make this a paradise for other amazing adventures. With mountains and valleys perfect for all sorts of high-octane adventures, from whitewater rafting on the Noguera Pallaresa River to world-renowned climbing at Terradets, or combining the thrills of both by canyoning in one of the many gorges. There are several ski resorts around an hour’s drive away that are small but offer excellent skiing and boarding and have good snow records. If you’re feeling really brave, you can parascend off the Montsec mountain range!

Local culture

If all this nature and exercise gets too much, why not try an evening tour and tasting at one of the local family-run vineyards or cheese makers? You could also escape for a day to Barcelona, with its fabled restaurants, markets and architecture; or Girona, to enjoy the medieval city centre and see where a lot of Game of Thrones was filmed.
